Freemans Bay

If you like your suburb with a bit of a dark past, then you really must consider Freemans Bay. The suburb now includes some of Auckland’s most desirable homes, but it wasn’t always this way!

One of the earliest settled parts of Auckland, Freemans Bay quickly fell into disrepute and during the latter half of the 19th century was home to industrial sites for the abattoir, the gasworks, sawmills and coal traders. The city morgue, city rubbish incinerator (now the well-known Victoria Park Market chimney), and the night soil dump all had their home in Freemans Bay.

How times have changed! New roads, motorways, construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and land reclamation have created a suburb right on the edge of the city that includes the Viaduct Basin, Victoria Park, and some of Auckland’s most prestigious bars and restaurants.

Many of the houses are heritage Victorian villas that will suit families with children, but the desirability of living close to the city means there are a lot of single dwellings in the area too – perfect for those who live alone or couples who want to be close to the heart of it all.

Local schools typically have an excellent reputation, and schools zoned for this area may include: Bayfield School, Freemans Bay School, Grey Lynn School, Newton Central School, Pt Chevalier School, Ponsonby Primary School, Richmond Road School, St Francis School, Westmere School, Marist Catholic School, St Joseph’s School, St Mary’s College, St Paul’s College, Pasadena Intermediate, Ponsonby Intermediate, Western Springs College, Auckland Girls’ Grammar School.
