Much of Pt Chevalier is situated on a peninsula, which stretches into the Waitemata Harbour and gives the area a feeling of being a bit apart from the rest of the city suburbs.                                                                          

This is enhanced by the architecture of the suburb, which differs from nearby Westmere and Grey Lynn with their old-style villas. Many of Pt Chev’s houses are 1920s California-style bungalows or sought-after 1930s and 1940s art deco buildings.

There are some truly beautiful parks in Pt Chevalier, including Coyle Park on the beach with its fabulous new playground, and the Meola Reef Reserve and Dog Park.

The shops include an eclectic mix of cafés, many of which cater for today’s various dietary requirements, and there are loads of Indian, Thai and Chinese restaurants and takeaways to satisfy dinnertime tummy rumblings.

The shops also reflect the special architectural quality of the suburb, with the original 19^th century homestead still in existence as the Pt Chevalier Community Centre. The Ambassador Bar, which was previously the area’s cinema and later the Ambassador Theatre, is a stunning 1920s building. One of the older buildings in the area is the Whau Lunatic Asylum (also known as Carrington and Oakley hospitals). Built in 1865 and restored after a fire in 1877, the building is now part of the Unitec campus.

Pt Chevalier has an abundance of local sports, social, cultural and children’s community groups, and a dedicated bunch of folk make up the Point Chevalier Historical Group.
