One of the earliest settled parts of Auckland, Freemans Bay quickly fell into disrepute and during the latter half of the 19th century was home to industrial sites for the abattoir, the gasworks, sawmills and coal traders. The city morgue, city rubbish incinerator (now the well-known Victoria Park Market chimney), and the night soil dump all had their home in Freemans Bay. How times have changed! Major road infrastructure, construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and land reclamation have created a suburb right on the edge of the city that includes the Viaduct Basin, Victoria Park, and some great bars and restaurants. Many of the houses are heritage Victorian villas that will suit families with children, but the desirability of living close to the city means there are a lot of single dwellings and apartments in the area too – perfect for those who live alone or couples who want to be close to the heart of it all.

What commission fee do the big Auckland real estate agencies charge?

Traditional real estate agencies charge 4% on the first $400,000 of the sale price and then an additional 2% on the remainder. An admin fee of around $500 and GST are then applied on top.
